Holiday Hot Chocolate

Whether you’re trimming the tree or relaxing by the fire (in the South, maybe the pool!), we’ve got something you’ll want to sip. As an added bonus, all these recipes are kid-friendly, but come with adult variations! Basic Hot Chocolate* Serves 4 - Adapted from Allrecipes.com Ingredients ⅓ c. unsweetened cocoa powder ¾ c. white sugar 1 pinch salt ⅓ c. boiling water 3½ c. milk ¾ tsp. vanilla extract ½ c. half-and-half  Marshmallows and/or whipped cream Procedure Combine the cocoa, sugar, salt, and boiling water in a saucepan over medium heat. Ginger Cocktails

      Autumn cocktails benefit greatly from spice and warmth, and ginger is a great way to bring those qualities to drink. As a bonus, the ginger syrup, once strained and put in a pretty bottle, makes a great hostess gift. Ginger Syrup 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger, peeled and chopped 1 c. sugar 1¼ c. water Combine ingredients in pot over medium-low heat. Simmer until sugar is dissolved. Continue to simmer over low heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Let cool. Pour mixture into jar and refrigerate overnight. Strain. Store in refrigerator for up to a week. Ginger Soda Mix ginger syrup, starting with two tablespoons, with 12 oz. club soda. Taste and adjust. Cream Soda Cocktail Mix one shot vanilla or cake-flavored vodka with one tablespoon ginger syrup.   Our blood-red beverage for Halloween can do double duty for adults and kids;  whether you spike it or leave out the vodka altogether, this one's sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Creepy Cocktail Serves 12+ Ingredients 1/2 gal. cranberry juice 1 can frozen limeade concentrate, thawed 1 bottle grenadine syrup 1 can tart cherries (pitted and packed in water), drained 2 liters ginger ale ½ fifth vodka (optional) Procedure Stir cranberry juice, limeade, grenadine syrup, and vodka (if using) together in a large pitcher.
