Christmas Amid the Oaks
It’s Christmastime in New Orleans, and while that doesn’t bring forth images of snow covered driveways and chimneys thick with smoke, it does conjure images of mighty oak trees adorned with lights. The sound of a small train horn reminds locals that the holiday season is once again in full swing as City Park’s Celebration in the Oaks opens its gates to invite visitors to bask in the magic of the season. Complete with Santa Claus, hot chocolate, and the light display of a Cajun Night before Christmas, Celebration in the Oaks combines all of the elements of a perfect New Orleans Christmas.
Every season, thousands of park visitors gather to embrace the joy of the season in what has truly become a New Orleans tradition. The beautiful carousel that sits in the center of the amusement side of the park eagerly awaits riders of all ages to take a turn atop its flying horses. Trees decorated by local school children line the walkways throughout the park, giving it a more personal feel as children search for their school’s special tree. The iconic Mr. Bingle, a snowman with an ice cream cone hat, candy cane hands and holly wings who previously welcomed the holidays outside of a local department store, now finds his home amid the lights of the park. A miniature train display with notable New Orleans landmarks mesmerizes children as they watch the small train travel back and forth across the mini recreated version of the city.
Visiting Celebration in the Oaks has become a time honored tradition among families in the city. Locals can rely on leaving the hustle and bustle of the holidays behind and entering this enchanting light display. It’s a place where the joy of the season can turn even the faintest of heart into a believer of the spirit of the holidays.
Open nightly, November 29 –January 4, 2014 the park showcases its beauty for the world to enjoy. Admission is $8, and tickets may be purchased and printed online prior to arrival. Tickets for the carousel gardens amusement rides may be purchased upon arrival.
